The waste your time looking at our cat pictures home page
Just what the web needs.
More pictures of peoples' cats!

But then if you were in a hurry to really get something done, you wouldn't be surfin'  now would you?

Updated September 23, 2000

Okay.  Here's the deal.  We have cats.  Of course, we can't resist taking their pictures and shooting videotape of them.  They're just so darn cute, ya know!  And, they never complain when you aim a camera at them.  That explains the piles of cat photos and miles of wasted tape lying around our house.

Then, of course, one ends up with a computer.  That leads to a web connection.  That brings with it the obligatory free web site.  Darn, we can't waste the opportunity to have something on that free site, now can we?

But what to put on that free web site?  Hmmm I wonder.  Personal information about me?  The family perhaps?  Maybe something useful or interesting?

Nahhhhh!

But, a web site should have graphics.  After all, what else will suck up bandwidth as efficiently as sending photos zipping across the globe?  And besides, with all of those neat toys like scanners, video capture devices, and digital cameras, we really need some way to justify owning them.

(insert drum roll here.)

Thus, the typical, web clogging CAT PICTURE home page is born!!!!

So, without any additional explanation or justification, here it is:

Now!!! On Selected Pages:  Waste even more time listening to the neat sounds our cats make!

I add new pictures intermittently, whenever I have some good new ones and some spare time on my hands.  When I add a new picture or pictures to a page, I put the new shots at the upper left corner of the array of thumbnails.  So, if you want to visit the site and look for any new pictures, they will always show up as the first shots on the pages, with the older shots pushed over to make room.  Since there is a limit to how much space I can occupy on the server with this stuff, I'll have to take off older pics to make room for the newer ones.  I'll also update the little line at the very top of this page to say what the date of last update was.  So, if you really care, you can check for new stuff without having to look at each of the individual pages.  If that date has changed, then you'll know there are new shots on the site.

Now a little explanation of how most of these photos were created for anyone who really cares:

Most of the newer pictures have been taken with a Kodak DC260 digital camera.  These shots are pretty good quality, since this camera has a reasonably high resolution imager.  So far, I'm quite happy with its results.  Having a digital camera will definitely encourage more pictures to be taken and put on the page.  You'll know the shots from the DC260 by their filenames which will always include the filename assigned by the camera itself (such as P0000456).  Added to these filenames are information that tells me something about the pic size, etc.

These (DC260) pictures have been reduced in resolution to keep the horizontal pixel size at or below about 600 pixels, or the vertical size at or below around 500 pixels whichever is the limiting factor.  This allows more convenient viewing on systems running in 800 X 600 mode or even in 640 X 480.  The camera captures the images at either 1536 X 1024, 1152 X 768, or 768 X 512.  I compress the pictures as well as crop and resize (resample) them.  This makes the photos quicker to download as well as making them fit lower resolution display settings.  I try to limit the size of each file to somewhere below about 64K. Even though you're here to waste some time, there is a limit to most folks' patience.

The quality of the original pictures from the DC260 are considerably better than what is shown here due to the compression and resizing.  If someone requests it, I may put some of the original resolution pictures on just to show what they look like right from the camera.  Unfortunately, without compressing or resizing, the images can be upwards of  half a megabyte even in JPG format.

I've removed all of the shots taken with the borrowed Sony Mavica in order to make more room on the page.

Some of the photos have been scanned in from standard color photo prints.  You won't know for sure which ones these are except that they won't have the obvious filenames from the DC260.
