JACKSON CANYON WYOMING
AREA OF CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN (ACEC)

The Jackson Canyon  Area of  Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) is located South West of Casper Wyoming and is comprised of approximately 3,900 acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.  This area was designated as an ACEC in May of 1992 to provide some respite for the magnificent Bald Eagles.  The Eagles come to Jackson Canyon during the winter months to roost there.  The ACEC is closed to motorized vehicles from November  1st to March 31st so as to limit the disturbance to the Eagles.

THE PROBLEM AT HAND

Although the ACEC and the BLM regulations in place to protect it have been in place since 1992 the effect is the same as if the ACEC did not exist.

WHY?

There is no enforcement of the restrictions protecting the ACEC and local snowmobilers blatantly and intentionally intrude into the restricted area of the Bald Eagle roosting habitat.  BLM boundary signs and restriction notices have been removed and destroyed by the users of these vehicles.

HOW CAN YOU HELP

Take a moment and write a letter and ask that the appropriate funding and effort be put into the proper enforcement of the regulations meant to protect the Bald Eagles.  The Bald Eagle a the symbol of the nation and a national treasure.  These public lands belong to the citizens of the United States, not just the residents of the state in which the PUBLIC lands are located.  Ask that steps be taken to appropriately protect these majestic feathered symbols of freedom.

Since 1997 the BLM has taken NO noticeable actions to protect this Eagle habitat area. Recent investigation into the public land indicates that the motorized traffic into the habitat area has been reduce by the Conservancy closure of motorize access across its property. The BLM has taken no action to re-post restricting signs removed by snowmobiles intruding into the area. The 1 inch thick Eagle Habit Area Management plan document is doing NOTHING but catching dust in the offices of the BLM. Who protect the National Symbol?
(NOVEMBER 2001)

Decisions to remove the Bald Eagle from the endangered list makes it even more important that we provide these majestic Eagles with protected habitat.
