| Minerva was the Roman and Etruscan goddess of intelligence, creativity, and wisdom. The Greek counterpart was Athena. Minerva was also the patroness of artisans and of all whose handiwork was guided by their minds. The name "Minerva" comes from the ancient root for "mind." The owl was sacred to her. |

In the painting, Minerva is presented with a facial expression displaying intensity and wisdom as well as profound beauty. With deliberation, Denton has focused upon the head of Minerva and created a crown of flowing designs to symbolize the energy and power of the mind. The owl's wing has been placed in the painting to symbolize the flight of thoughts to and from the mind. |
